The North Wales Lunatic Asylum (Denbigh Asylum) was the first psychiatric asylum built in Wales. This asylum was initially suggested in response to the poor treatment that the Welsh were receiving in English asylums, where language barriers would often create further difficulties and tension. The building was completed in 1848 in the town of Denbigh.

The asylum housed the maximum number of patients in the late 1800s until 1956. As controversial and frequently experimental or fallacious treatments were introduced to the medical environment, the asylum adopted these practises. The methods used included insulin shock treatment, Cardiazol, the treatment of mania using lithium, electroconvulsive therapy, and the oh-so-abhorred leucotomy treatment, or lobotomy.

The hospital was gradually closed in sections from the 1920’s to 2002, after Enoch Powell, the Conservative British politician and writer, introduced his “Hospital Plan” for England and Wales after visiting Denbigh. Naturally, this Plan by an intellectual was held in high esteem; Powell’s expulsion from the Shadow Cabinet after his anti-immigration “River’s of Blood” speech didn’t occur until 1968.

The main hospital building was the final to close in 1995.
